Lois Ehlert was born on November 11, 1934 in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. She grew up painting and sculpting. Her parents allowed her to keep on going projects spread out on a folding table in their home. Her favorite technique is cutting and pasting. Both parents were very creative, mom a seamstress and dad worked with wood. Lois won a Caldecott Honor in 1989 for Color Zoo.

Tomie dePaola
Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut in 1934. At age 4, he knew he wanted to become a writer and an illustrator. His mother was an avid book lover and read to him and his brother often. As a child, dePaola would illustrate the books his mother read to him. By age 10, dePaola was writing books for his younger sisters' birthdays. One of these books was Glimmera, the Story of a Mermaid. He often draws upon his own childhood experiences in writing books; his Italian grandmother was the model for the grandmother in Watch Out for the Chicken Feet in Your Soup. Tomie dePaola has published over 200 children”s books over the past 35 years, and has won numerous awards, including both a Caldecott Honor Award, and a Newbery Honor Award. A prolific writer, he has written up to four children's books in a single year. Tomie dePaola now lives in New Hampshire in a large renovated 200-year-old barn with his four dogs.

Jan Brett was born on December 1, 1949 in Norwell, Massachusetts. She wanted to be an illustrator from a young age. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Jan started her career by selling her drawings; pictures for greeting cards, restaurant menus and science books. In 1978 she illustrated her first book, Woodland Crossings. Her own first book written and illustrated by herself was Fritz and The Wild Horses. She has traveled all over the world to research her stories.

Ezra Jack Keats was born on March 11, 1969 in Brooklyn, NY. He loved to draw and paint as a child. After his father died suddenly, he got a job painting murals to support his family. He joined the army in 1943 where he designed camouflage patterns for equipment and uniforms. After the war Ezra traveled to France to study painting. When he returned to the USA he became a commercial artist illustrating magazine and book covers. In 1963, his book "The Snowy Day" won the Caldecott Medal. Most of his books included Peter and his friends and their lives in the city. Ezra Jack Keats passed away in 1983. There is still a statue of Peter and Willie in Brooklyn's Prospect Park.
